One down...
...one to go! Mittens that is. I'm making mittens instead of socks. The yarn just didn't meet my standard for socks. Next time hopefully, now I know how thin I have to spin! This is around a DK or sport weight.

Fiber Friday...
...and it's been a good one! I was able to get this fiber spun up this week. I got it long ago and was waiting until I was good enough to spin a fingering/sport weight for a pair of socks! It is from Bird's Nest Yarns.
It is Superwash Merino and Nylon and it spun up beautifully, it is so soft and easy to spin fine.
It is 4 ounces and 200 yards. 3 ply (navajo ply) and sport weight. I have new questions every time I spin something and this time it's how many ounces do I need to spin 400 yards of fingering/sport weight in a 3 ply? I can make a pair of short socks with this, but not tall ones for sure! I got a new sock book and want to try out knitting from the toe up, can't wait to get started actually! I don't think this skein is going to say in this form much longer, I'm going to get it into a ball pretty quick I think!
Here are a few close up shots, as you can tell I'm pretty proud of this one!

EDITED TO ADD:
This isn’t no sport weight! I did a swatch on size 3 needles, way too small, size 7, way good. I’m confused :-(
It looks, feels and measures up to other commercial sport weight, but it doesn’t behave like it when knitted. Any suggestions, what’s up with handspun yarn? Should it be similar to commercial yarn? For example: 3.5-4 ounces = around 200 yards worsted or 3.5-4 ounces = 400 + yards fingering? The look and feel will be different perhaps?? HELP! So if the above is true, then my yarn here is worsted weight and I’ve got a long way to go to get a 3 ply sport, let a lone fingering weight! Yikes!
Now I’m disappointed I can’t make socks with this…

I've got a giveaway...
...for you! This one is a very special gift that was given to me and I just don't have time to do it justice. This yarn is part of the Honeysuckle Project for everyone affected by breast cancer.
The yarn is 80% Superwash merino, 20% nylon; 400 yards/100 grams/3.5 ounces.
The website: www.TheHoneySuckleProject.com will launch in June with patterns and kits for purchase and tools for tracking the impact of the project.
Knit something pink and donate it to the cause. There are lots of ways to get involved! Knit a pair of socks and donate them to a rally to be auctioned and this raises money for the cause. Knit a gift for a friend who is battling the disease and this creates comfort for our friends.
Tell me why this yarn inspires you and you'll be entered to win it!
I will post the winner on May 31st and you will be responsible to contact me with your mailing address within one week. angela@allforloveofyarn.com
Good luck!

I'm so thrilled...
...with this awesome skein of yarn that I spun. I'm proud to say I spun it all on a drop spindle! I plied on a wheel, much better and faster!
8ounces/250 grams
350 yards
Alpaca, Merino, Mulberry Silk, Camel down, Bamboo, Firestar, Angelina
All spun from these 3 batts:
The fiber is from Boho Knitter Chic Spins and Birds Nest Yarns. It was so much fun to spin these; I started with my first batt last June, almost a year ago! I didn't know what to do with just 3 ounces of fiber, so when I saw another batt in October that was very similar I snatched it up. Then I saw the middle batt that someone else spun, the yarn was gorgeous and I thought it would go perfectly with mine. They all made for a perfect 3 ply and I'm very happy with how it turned out! I want to make myself an ear-flap hat and mittens, but I'm not sure I'll have enough for both, we'll see as I go along, not sure what I want more though, mittens or hat...

I've decided...
...on the name of both of my new yarns! Thank you, thank you for your suggestions!!
LUMINOSITY for the bamboo blend (Suggested by Emily)
and
SERENDIPITY for the alpaca, wool and silk single. I think it fits perfectly, isn't a single ply yarn a happy accident in a way, it was just so good the way it was they couldn't dare give it another ply! (Suggested by Nicole)
Please contact me for your prizes! SURPRISE! I think I will give a skein to both of you!

You are...
...awesome! It is going to be a touch choice, nope I still haven't decided!
There were a few in the running, including Zenkun; Tish, I loved your explanation and it fits so well, but it doesn't quite fit into the theme of my other yarns, know what I mean? I keep going back to it though, it's original and I like names with meaning. It doesn't really need to fit with the others I suppose.
I love Serendipity/Serendipitous or Felicity and Serdce which means Russian for "heart"? How can I not love this? I didn't actually ask my husband, the Russian to be sure yet and to see how it's pronounced, but in English it sounds like I'm saying Certs, isn't that a breath freshener or something?
When I read Emily's suggestion: Luminosity, I had completely forgot that I tucked this in the back of my mind as a possible name, I thought it would fit a sparkly yarn, but I tried some out and didn't like them much, dyeing them is a pain in the butt, just too temperamental for me right now. So, I put the name aside and hadn't thought about it for this bamboo yarn until I read Emily's post. As they say, great minds think alike.
So, my decision is not yet final....I might choose 2 names from this great line up, since I have another new yarn and I think one of these other names will fit it well. It is 40/40/20 Baby Alpaca/Wool/Silk in a DK weight Single ply. It's gorgeous and I'm dyeing it now for Shepherd's Harvest.
I'm sorry I have no photos yet; I've got some DK weight drying, but no bamboo has been dyed yet. I might not decide until after I dye some and play around with it to know; I'll keep you posted and thank you all for your wonderful suggestions; I really appreciate it!
